Maharashtra Introduces Free Higher Education Policy for EWS, SEBC, and OBC Girls

Maharashtra's government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has unveiled a new policy aimed at boosting women's education. The initiative, announced after the introduction of the Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme in the state budget, offers free higher education to girls from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).

Under the scheme, which aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP), tuition and exam fees will be waived for orphaned students of both genders. State Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare highlighted the policy's potential to empower girls from ordinary families to pursue their dreams of higher education.

The decision, set to take effect from the academic year 2024-25, includes an allocated budget of Rs. 906 crore. It aims to increase the number of girls opting for professional courses such as agriculture, engineering, and pharmacy, where currently only 36% of girls are enrolled. The policy covers admissions to vocational courses in various educational institutions across Maharashtra.
